Rangeaire Airedales - the 1980's

Ch Rangeaire Rolls RoyceCh Rangeaire Rolls Royce

The 1980's were most significant for Rangeaire in that during this decade when some of our most famous dogs and bitches were bred. These were not only famous for us, they founded other significant Airedale Kennels. My husband and three children all assisted in the raising of the puppies on our small suburban block. But the magnificent Ch Rangeaire Rolls Royce dominated the 1980's.

'Royce' was not only one of Australia's most famous show and stud dogs, he was the dog who was my beloved pet for more than a decade. Born in a large litter of 13, his quality stood out from the beginning. Had the title been available at that time, he would have made 'Supreme Champion' quite easily.

He had such an awesome personality and ring presence that by the age of 7 months 12 days, he qualified for the title Australian Champion. He continued with 17 all breeds Best Exhibit in Show awards plus 2 Best Exhibit in Show at Airedale Speciality Shows. His 163 Challenge Certificates included 5 Royal Show Challenges plus one under the famous Stanley Dangerfield, totalling 2,382 Challenge points. His amazing 37 Best Exhibit in Group, 16 Best Opposite Sex and a massive 17 Puppy in Group proved his outstanding breed type from the beginning. Had he been alive today he would have certainly qualified for his 'Supreme Champion' title. He lived until the ripe old age of 14, produced the 22 Champions listed below including 4 from the frozen semen we took from him which produced a litter for Margaret and Rob Warren of Seaire, some 18 years later. From this litter came Ch Seaire Spirit of Ecstacy (AI) who came to live with us.

Ch Rangeaire Rocka Billy

In 1980 when Kay Bloxom approached me to mate her bitch Aireline Lady Amanda, she did so for the sole purpose of breeding just one litter so she could keep a puppy from her bitch. As her bitch carried a background similar to my lines, I saw the possibilities of stitching this bitch's lines back into my breeding programme.

Out crossing was provided by this bitch's grandfathers who were Ch Siccawei Baronet (imp UK) and Ch Bengal Valley Forge (Imp UK). However this bitch's grandmother was Ch Tjuringa Fair Dinkum on one side and a daughter of Fair Dunkum on the other. With this common background, using Ch Rangeaire Ringo Starr provided an ideal line bred litter. So Aireline Lady Amanda was leased and the litter to Ringo was bred under the Rangeaire prefix. The most promising puppy in this litter became Ch Rangeaire Rocka Billy owned by Ken Campbell.

Billy was mated to at least 2 bitches Ch Rangeaire Rag Doll, for us and Ch Windview Sweet Alice CD, a grand daughter of Ch Brentleigh Ben Nevis CD. For Rag Doll, this was to be her only litter as she ate a corn cob which fatally caused a bowel obstruction. But from these two single matings to Rag Doll and Sweet Alice, 5 separate Kennels were founded as follows:

Ch Rangeaire Billy Produced

  • Ch Rangeaire Rockn Roll who we fortunately retained. She in turn produced Ch Rangeaire Rice Bubbles and Ch Rangeaire Rythmn Blues for us and South African Ch Rangeaire Ayers Rock of Albenor who produced many generations of Albenor Champions for Cynthia Barnett in South Africa
  • Ch Rangeaire Rag Trade (for Phil Cochrane's Ozaire kennel in Ballarat Vic)
  • Rangeaire Rowsley the mother of the bitch that founded Alan and Pam Bardoe's Devonaire Kennel which in turn founded Airewood
  • Ch Windiew Ikabod CD (foundation Airedale for Alsirat in South Australia)
  • Litter sisters Ch Windview Illara and Ch Windview Inkalass (foundation bitches for Ken Campbell's Belltirna kennel)

Fay Sheppard was brought up successfully breeding and showing Papillons with her mother. She became besotted with Airedales when she was living with Ch Rangeaire Rising Sun. So she bought Aust and NZ Ch Rangeaire Rain Mist. Fay became a great friend and we travelled to many shows together.

Being almost a sister to Rolls Royce and looking for another outcross, Aust & NZ Ch Rangeaire Rain Mist (Aust & NZ Ch Rangeaire Roulette to Ch Rangeaire Referee) was mated to Ch Drakehall Dragoon (Imp UK) who went back to the old Siccawei bloodlines and produced Ch Rangeaire Rain Storm. 'Stormy' fulfilled my expectations and had excellent Airedale breed type with his short back, great reach of neck, excellent forequarters and beautifully textured coat. But although he held his own in the show ring, his greatest legacy was when he had his only mating to Ch Rangeaire R Rated and produced

Ch Rangeaire Rockin Robin

Ch Rangeaire Rockin RobinCh Rangeaire Rockin Robin

Robin had a great personality but although she had excellent breed type, her exceptionally hard coat did not add the furnishings to give that 'icing on the cake' that makes a top show dog. However, she did win Best Puppy in Show awards at both all-breeds level and at an Airedale Specialty Show

But Robin left her mark on the breed as a sensational producer, laying the foundation for other breeders that were successful over the next two decades. She was firstly mated to Ch Rangeaire Raggs and secondly to Ch Rangeaire Rolls Royce.

Ch Rangeaire Robin Produced

  • Ch Rangeaire Raggtime for us
  • Ch Rangeaire Raggtime Beau C.D. who in turn produced Ch Devonaire Maido Kent for Alan and Pam Bardoe - Devonaire, Ch Devonaire Lady Pamela for Lyn Duff and Devonaire Buttons n Bows C.D. for Margaret Burgess
